Ajmer - Puskar

Spending your vacation in Ajmer will be unforgettable experience. Ajmer is located on the southwest side of Jaipur . It is an oasis wrapped in green hills. It was founded by Raja Ajay Pal Chauhan in the 7th century AD and it continued to be a major center for the Chauhan dynasty till 1193 AD.

Ajmer is a popular pilgrimage centre for the Hindus as well as the Muslims. The Dargah Sharif tomb of the Sufi saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti is especially famous, which is equally revered by both the Hindus as well as the Muslims. Mayo College, a school exclusively for Indian nobility, is also situated here. Ajmer is also the base for visiting Pushkar, which is just 14 kms away.

Fair & Festivals:

Urs Ajmer Sharif (seventh month of the Islamic calendar): This festival is held in the memory of the revered Sufi Saint Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti. People congregate at the place and offer prayers.

How to reach:

Air: The nearest airport is Jaipur, which is 135kms away.

Train: Ajmer is on the Delhi - Jaipur - Marwar - Ahmedabad -Mumbai line and most trains stops at Ajmer .

Road: It is connected with bus from all places like Jaipur, Agra, Aligarh, and Abu road, Bikaner, Bharatpur, Barmer, Haridwar, Chittorgarh, Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and Nagaur.

PLACES TO SEE

Nasiyan (Red) Temple
It is a Digambar Jain Temple, which has a two-storey hall adjacent to the main temple. The entire hall consists of gold and silver stones and some precious stones. The place is popularly known as “Soni Ji Ki Nasiyann”. Also known as the Red temple, it mesmerizes you with its historic appeal. Dedicated to the first Jain tirthankar Rishabdeoji, the Nasiyan temple also has a museum that displays objects related to Jain beliefs and mythology. Constructed in 1865, the main chamber of the temple consists of 2 storyed hall adorned with wood sculptures depicting Jain concepts, while the first floor is known as the "Swarna Nagri" and displays gold replicas of all the Jain temples in India. It will make your vacations an astonishing time.

Dargah Khwaja Sahib
It is one of the holiest Muslim shrines present in the country, it is the landmark of Ajmer . Khwaja Moin-ud-din Chisti, a Sufi saint from Persia made this place his abode from 1192 till he died in 1236 AD. Mughal King Humayun, then completed the construction of the shrine. The Dargah is approached through a massive gate with silver doors. Emperor Akbar made an annual pilgrimage to Ajmer . Mughal Emperors Akbar and Shah Jahan have built mosques in the complex.

Pushkar

While vacationing in Ajmer visit Pushkar which is just 12km from Ajmer . For any Hindu, Pushkar is a very important pilgrim center. According to the legend, Pushkar means a pond created by flower. It was formed when Brahma dropped a lotus flower on the earth to determine a place for his “yagna”, a holy sacrifice.

Pushkar Cattle Fair (next 17th – 24th November, 2007): Pushkar Cattle Fair takes place on the day of Kartik Purnima. The festival is marked with vast cattle and camel fair and pilgrims bathe in the lake.

PLACES TO SEE

Brahma Temple
This temple was built in 14th century and is the only temple dedicated to Lord Brahma. A silver turtle sits on the floor facing the sanctorum or the "Garbha Griha". The marble floor around the turtle contains hundreds of silver coins, with the donor's name engraved on them.It lies beyond the Nagaparvat and Anasagar Lake in Pushkar. The only Brahma temple in India, it is a very popular pilgrimage of Hindus. The legend has it that Lord Brahma performed a Yagna here, along with all the Gods and Goddesses. It is believed that a lotus fell from the hands of Lord Brahma and Sarovar Lake appeared immediately after.

PushkarCamel Fair

Pushkar is known for its Pushkar Camel Fair, it is one of the largest in India and the only one of its kind in the entire world. During this fair, lakhs of people flock to Pushkar, along with camels and cattle for trading of live stock, horse dealing, pilgrimage and a religious festival. Pushkar is a small town, but during the fair, this small town becomes the cultural phenomenon with colourfully dressed devotees, musicians, acrobats, folk dancers, traders, comedians, sadhus and tourists reaching here during the fair.

It takes place in the month of Kartika (November), beginning on Ashtmi, the 8th day of Lunar calendar and continues till full moon or Poornima. During the first half of the festival period, the camel and cattle trading reaches its peak. Devotees also take holy dips in the holy "Sarovar" lake, as the sacred water is known to bestow salvation.
